How To Know The Tyre Size

Whenever you are visiting a tyre shop Sydney for an upgrade or change of your vehicle’s tyres, it is of paramount importance to remember the dimensions of the tyres of your vehicles as you will need to buy tyres that are as close as possible to the original size.

There is always a set of numbers and letters that relate to the tyre’s size besides manufacturer and tyre name (e.g. Hankook). The essence of these tyre dimensions is as explained below:

Example of Tyre Size

Example of Tyre SizeExample: Hankook – 155/65R14

  • 155 stands for tyre width in millimetres.
  • 65 is the tyre profile.
  • R stands for radial construction.
  • 14 stands for wheel rim diameter in inches.

Understanding a Tyre’s Profile

A tyre profile relates to sidewall’s depth (i.e. the wall that stands at the tyre’s side). The profile is conveyed as a percentage of the tyre’s width. E.g.: In Our Tyre Size Example above: 155/65R14 tyre has a sidewall or profile that is 60% of the 155mm (width). Usually, a low profile tyre is 50% or below and with ultra low profile tyres, it can be as low as 30%. Generally, tyres with lower profiles are fitted to higher performance vehicles.

Although low profile tyres give a somewhat harder ride, it gives you superior control and enhanced handling on the corners. Additionally, switching to a lower profile on the same size of wheels will change your speedometer reading, so before you hit the roads you’ll need to repair it. How to Check Your Vehicle’s Tyre Tread

How to Check Your Vehicle’s Tyre Tread

Are you aware when your car’s tyres’ tread depth reaches 3mm, your vehicle’s wet grip handling is significantly reduced?

That’s right! But don’t worry, as there is a simple way to check the tyre tread depth using a 20c ‘coin test’ and remain safe on the road. The 20c coin test will help you to find out whether your car’s tyre’s tread depth is very low or just fine.

All right, let’s do this simple 20c ‘coin test’ – Take an Australian 20c coin and place into the main tread grooves of your vehicle’s tyre:

  • If the outer circle of the 20p coin is hidden when it’s inserted, then your car’s tyre tread is well above the legal limit.
  • Conversely, if you’re able to see the outer circle of the coin, then your vehicle tyres may be unsafe and illegal to drive on, so you need to show it to a tyre dealer or professional at the earliest and get a new tyre set fitted to your vehicle.

Remember to perform this coin test on at least 3 locations for each tyre. Besides, as the coin test is so simple and quick, check your vehicle’s tyres at least once a month and stay safe on the road.

How Can The Tyre Tread Depth Impact Braking Distances Of Your Car?

Most of the new tyres come with tyre tread between 7mm & 9mm. Here in Australia, 1.6mm is the minimum tyre tread required by law. However, the latest research recommends replacing your vehicle tyres when it has just 3mm for your safety and to get optimal performance out of your vehicle.

How Can The Tyre Tread Depth Impact Braking Distances Of Your Car

When your car tyre’s tread reduces, your vehicle’s stopping distance will increase. Moreover, improper tyre pressures can also cause longer braking distances because your vehicle’s tyre’s surface contact with the road gets less effective. That’s why it’s important to ensure your vehicle’s tyre’s tread is safe and law binding.
